First race of the year and it was a sprint race which happened to be the British AG Sprint Championships. It’s been my first sprint race in some time and this early in the season was quite a shock to the system. It is the first of many races that i want to use as training aids to get myself fit for the Outlaw at the end of July.
The swim was a delightful 13 degrees. I swam like a three legged donkey and at times it felt like the back of my head had a target on it as it was getting such a pummelling. Was glad to claw my way out the water and onto my stronger disciplines.
I was excited to test out my new Knight front wheel. Ive noticed in training that I've turned into a diesel train. The difference between my high end TT power and my chug along for several hours is marginal. I feel more robust and durable, but don't have much above threshold. There was some interesting pack riding going on during the bike, which made for a more tactical bike ride.
Jumping off the bike and out onto the run It took the best part of the 5km to actually feel like i was running. At first it felt like i had jelly legs with wooden feet. Was grateful to cross the line and receive a thirst quenching Erdinger Alkoholfrei from Captain Pete.
Lessons learnt from race 1.
- Need to swim more
- Need to incorporate more brick sessions
- Need to wait at least another year before i do another sprint race!
