Winter is coming and as such it’s time for many a Christmas party and awards dinners. And as I have come to find the combination of such alcohol fuelled indulgent feasts are not overly compatible with the running of Half Marathons.
The meal was fantastic, it started with a barrage of champagne, and finished with double helpings of port, all that fell between remains top secret to all but those who were there.
The aftermath of the night left me not feeling my best on the morning of the race. I raised myself like a zombie fresh from the grave. I had nothing for breakfast except another two pints of water to try and flush my system. I can’t say at this point I was overly excited to embark on the Bedford half marathon given my previous nightly activities, but we were there to be a part of something bigger than are own feelings and desires; The Team Erdinger Half Marthon Mega Team! (A motley collection of running talent pulled from the far corners of this fine island)
The Race
after carefully placing myself back in row 3 or 4 of the start line to stop my usual routine of getting too excited and running through the first few km's like I’m being chased by a lion (which in this case i was, as Lucy was in the race). My flawless plan failed as I hit 3:07 - 3:09 for km's 1 & 2.
It wasn’t pretty (as you can see from the photo) but I dragged myself round in 1:14:57. However as far as the Team Erdinger Cambridge division was concerned I had the best of it. Lucy pulled her calf and decided to walk round the 2nd half of the course (you must remember she is completely dulally bonkers) and Kathryn Pulled her knee after getting through the first 9 hard hilly miles and decided to get a lift down the hill for the last 4.
Hopefully I can put down a better performance at the Cambridge Half next year, when training starts to get a little more serious.
