Post Ironman Lanzarote I’ve had a bit of a nightmare. I had one week of just being smashed followed by two weeks of being ill (probably due to my immune system being suppressed by the ironman). All in all it meant one month of doing nothing but an Ironman.
I re-started training two weeks before Dambuster which is not ideal, but as I’m aiming at the longer events this year this was an ideal opportunity to give the engine a good ragging and stretch out the legs. I had no idea what sort of shape I was in, but I had a target of trying to make the podium.
Rutland water is a fantastic location for a triathlon and on the day we were blessed with some beautiful weather. It was an early start as it is with most events. The first wave (My Wave) was off at 7am, which meant a 4:30 start in Cambridge. I’m very grateful to my wonderful girlfriend Lauren who drove me to the event at crazy o’clock in the morning as I was passed out in the passenger seat. Then drove me back after whilst I was passed out in the passenger seat!
It was an interesting run in swim start. I placed myself on the far right of the pack next to Carl Shaw (who ended up winning the event). Carl must be swimming well as I’m pretty sure he swam fly all the way to the first buoy, that or he hitched a ride on a dolphin as he crushed the swim in 18:45. I came out the water 11th in 21:47, not my finest swim but a fair reflection of my small preparation for the race.
This year is an Ironman focused year, so I have been doing a fair amount of biking. However the type of riding you do for ironman tends to turn you into a complete diesel engine. I seem to have lost the ability to rev the engine, but have gained the ability to chug along all day like a little steam train. The course was fantastic and I look forward to having another crack at it when I do the Vitruvian later in the year. It is not a particularly fast bike course as it includes plenty of rolling hills to test the legs. By the end of the bike I had moved up a few places to 8th, but had my work cut out to make it to the podium on the run.
The run was an out and back around the lake. It was nice to be able to see the guys that you were trying to run down. I had the 3rd fastest run of the day and it enabled me to pull myself up to 6th overall. I just ran out of tarmac to be able to run myself onto the podium.
Thanks to www.pacesetterevents.com for putting on a great race and to www.erdinger-alkoholfrei.co.uk for restoring me post-race as I sat in the sun and knocked back a couple.
