A Half marathon in my home town of Cambridge, was a 'must do' when looking at races this year. The start was walking distance from the Cov G performance centre. and the Race would act as a nice benchmarking race. The race was incredible. The route weaved through the very heart of Cambridge past the spectacular colleges and through the beautiful cobbled streets. The support was truly awesome, so many friends and strangers cheering you on makes running fast easy. Possibly one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever had the pleasure of racing in.
I didn’t taper for the race, if fact i thought i may have blown it as a did a big 100mile bike session with James Gill 2 days before (for the greater good!).
My whole game plan for the race was based on the first 2 km's. I ALWAYS go out too hard. In the Bedford Half a few months back i went through the first and second km in sub 3:10. This time I aimed to run 3:30 for the first two. I didn’t bother warming up as i wanted to stay chilled out and not get hyped up. It worked (3:22 & 3:13 not exactly 3:30 but close enough) and I went on to run a PB of 1:13:02

It’s amazing the power that just pacing a race well can have on the overall performance. A lesson that I need to take into Ironman!
