I will be opening my 2014 triathlon season at Ironman Lanzarote in a few days time. It feels like I'm being shipped off to war, an Ironwar! I think with an Ironman race you have the standard race nerves coupled with the brutality of the race itself. You start fully well knowing that it is going to utterly destroy you. I know short of mechanical nightmare that I will be dancing on the edge of total body breakdown, which is kind of scary in itself.
This will also be the first proper race in which I will be flying the colours for Team Erdinger. There have been many good results coming from the other guys and girls on the team and now it's my time to step up to the mark and put out a big one.
Training up to the race has been good. Maybe I could have done more, but maybe you can always do more. I haven't injured myself and I haven't been ill yet (I'm sure this easyjet flight has serval people carrying bubonic plague and smallpox!). I take confidence in my last ironman simulation training session; (biking 3hrs at a solid 35kph and getting off and running 32km at 2:39 marathon pace.) This has given me belief that I am capable of doing something special. I just hope I can unlock it in Lanza.
Race day game plan for me is all about being conservative. I know how I race and I know what will cause me to have a bad race. I'm not going to think about crushing the bike. For me to do well I need to get of the bike with legs fresh enough to run 3hrs for the marathon. If I finish with a sub 3hrs run split I've had a good race and will be happy no matter the overall race result.
Sub race goal is to beat Gossage and take the house championship belt (We absolutely need a belt) I just hope that if she chicks me, it's because she's had a stormer rather than me having a disaster.
See you on the other side
