Now I've been riding the same Cervelo P2 for many years now. When i rock up at races It feels like I'm on an old vintage classic when compared to todays hyper bikes. My old faithful P2 has served me well and i don't have any intention of retiring it soon but here are still gains to be had without changing the bike. In the past I have always set my own TT position. Which basically involved me tinkering here and there trying to make myself as small and low as possible. The net result being riding the bike with a slammed negative 17degree stem. I would typically spend winter breaking myself in.
Over the past year I’ve have heard many whisperings of a wise and knowledgable bike fitter in town. This grandmaster of bike’ry’ was to be found chained up in the in the back of Primo cycles fuelled solely on small Italian coffee’s. The journey to reach him was perilous but I can confirm upon meeting Ben ‘Yoda’ Hallam that he exceeded my expectations.
We were instantly on the same wavelength of where we wanted to the fit to go. He worked me from my feet up, quickly honing in on any biomechanical weaknesses with my current setup and providing solutions to correct and improve them. He eloquently explained the reasoning behind the changes that he made and then swiftly moved onto the next issue. Then was no bullshit and he didn't pull any punches.
The 3D motion capture re-enforced the the reasoning for the changes made and the Bio Racer green screen helped to refine the fit. When you can see how your knee tracks through the pedal cycle before and after it gives you confidence that positive changes have occurred.
I went into the fit happy just to go as aero as possible and don't worry about being comfortable (ill get used to it!), but he actually made it a lot more comfortable. My power numbers are higher and I'm punching a smaller hole in the wind than before. This can only mean one thing. Im going to be going faster, so Andrew Diplock and Barney Palmer will have to keep dreaming if they want to take my king of Cambridge Triathlon Crown!
